5. English Task 2 - LO: To develop positive attitudes to reading by listening and discussing a wide range of poetry.

Read the poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright. Read it to yourself a few times. You can also listen to Kit Wright reading his poem aloud if you visit this web page: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zkpmhyc

Some things to think and talk about:

  1. Do you like the poem? Can you explain why?
  2. How is the poem set out on the page? Is punctuation used?
  3. What lines are repeated?
  4. Which line uses ‘alliteration’?
  5. What is your favourite line in the poem?
  6. In the line ‘My box is fashioned from ice and gold and steel’ what does the word ‘fashioned’ mean? What other word could be used in its place?

Tuesday 28th April 2020

Hi Puffins, hope you are all keeping well and safe.

Recently, I’ve loved planting seeds and watching them grow and I wanted to show you how well they are doing! I have grown some Gerberas (one of my favourite flowers), some lettuce, some ‘forget me nots’ flowers, and some violas. Hopefully soon, I will see some more! Can you remember what seeds need in order to grow?

Here are today’s tasks:

1. Maths task 1https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ Please complete Week 1 (NOT SUMMER TERM) Lesson 1 ‘Tenths as decimals’ today. Please watch the video then have a go at the activities and mark with the answers.

2. Maths Task 2 - please complete up to 1 hour on Mathletics (https://login.mathletics.com/)

3. Maths Task 3 - complete the sessions set on TT Rockstars (https://ttrockstars.com/).

4. English Task 1 - spend 15 minutes on Spelling frame Rule 18 games then complete a practice test when you feel confident. This week’s words are:

  • Crescent
  • Descent
  • Discipline
  • Fascinate
  • Scene
  • Scent
  • Science
  • Scissors

5. English Task 2  - LO: To prepare poems to read aloud and perform.

Yesterday you read the poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright. Today you are going practise reading this poem aloud. Hide away somewhere quietly and read it through two or three times, reading it aloud. You need to think about:

  • Volume – can the audience hear you clearly?
  • Intonation- are you using expression so that the audience are interested in what you are reading?
  • Pace- Are you reading too fast or slow?

You could always record you reading of it on a phone or iPad and then listen to it back to hear how you sound.

Now invite your family to come and listen to your performance. Remember what you have practised and wait for the applause!

Wednesday 29th April 2020

5. English Task 2  LO: To plan a poem.

If you had a special, magic box what would you like to put inside? You could put in a favourite toy, a special memory, things you are missing at the moment. It doesn’t have to be real, some ideas may be made up and mythical or thoughts and ideas.

Record all your ideas as you will need them tomorrow. Can you up-level some of the words you have chosen? Add description?

Some ideas…

A picnic in the park with friends.       My favourite teddy Lucy, threadbare and loved.        A rainbow unicorn jumping over the stars.            The first words of a child.              A missed hug from family.      A dinosaur driving a dirty digger.
