I have also attached the VOCABULARY NINGA pack to go with this film.  There are some great vocabulary lists and activities you can do that will support you when writing in this unit.  Please have a look at expanding your vocabulary choices (making sure you look up the definition if you are not sure!)

Remember: You don’t always have to print all the resource sheets- you can always use plain/lined paper and jot down the titles and labels from the resource sheets.

Monday 29th June

LO: To understand a film through VIPERS

Look at the VIPERS question sheet.  Work through the VIPERS questions- stopping at the given times on the sheet.  Try not to watch the whole film first as it will give away some of the prediction questions.

It may be useful to print the VIPERS questions out- or take a photo of them so you can watch the film and answer the questions as you go along.

Answer all questions until 3 minutes into the film

(You will be continuing tomorrow)

Wednesday 1st June

LO: To write a description using expanded noun phrases.

What other words (synonyms) can you think of for the word ‘old’?  Jot them down.

Look at the words (synonyms) – which ones do you think would be silver and which ones gold? (silver words- less effective, gold being the most descriptive?).  Remember that gold words are not always the longest or the most complex.

  • Work through resource 1a- use a thesaurus to help you

(Finding synonyms for bronze (boring words))

  • What do you think the features and purpose of the machine are?
  • Using Resource 1b-  re-watch the film again and focus on the machine and it’s features and purpose .Fill in resource 1b.

Thursday 2nd June

LO: To use emotive language

What were The Alchemist’s memories? Play the clip from 1:08 to 2:28. List his memories together. Why do they think these memories were powerful?

Can they link to strong emotion?

Some questions to think about:

How is emotion depicted (represented) through music, colours, words etc… in the clip?

What words are more emotive than others? Explain that today they are going to convey emotion through writing. Discuss emotive language as a device to create emotions and feelings.

Look at  resource 2a.

Where is emotive language used?

How can you tell?

What person/ tense is it written in?

TASK:

Children to write about a powerful positive memory they have which they would use to fuel their machine. This can be a day/event/person/milestone etc.

Can you use a variety of sentence openers and use of emotive language to convey feeling? Can you also use extended noun phrases in your work.

You may want to look at resource 2a again to get some ideas of how to write your memory.

Look at resource 2b to ensure you have included all elements needed in your memory.

Plenary: Use the check list to self-mark your work (resource 2b)

Friday 3rd June

LO: To use similes and metaphors to convey thoughts and feelings.

Play the clip from 1:30-2:38 “Because of the creature I was becoming…”

Why does the alchemist use this noun to describe himself?

What does it tell them about the effect the machine had on him and his family?

Look at resource 3a

Here is a list of phrases that the alchemist might have used to describe his machine and what was happening. Can they turn them into similes or metaphorical phrases? Look at resource 3b and discuss how the Alchemist’s Regret uses similes and metaphors for effect.

Task

Write as a young Verideon, watching how his father is changing because of his work. You must use similes and metaphors to convey feelings and emotion, and imply a sense of sympathy for the boy.
